Innovation in Action

Boosting Employee Engagement through Design Thinking

The Crowdsourced Innovation Cloud has empowered employees to engage in innovation through collaborative and bottom-up initiatives actively. One notable story involves a group of engineers who, with the help of a design thinking coach, transformed a basic idea into a fully-fledged solution for optimizing aircraft maintenance workflows.

By collaborating across departments and utilizing the platform’s tools for knowledge sharing and feedback, their idea was refined through iterative development. The result not only improved efficiency but also fostered a culture of ownership and creativity, showcasing the power of employee-driven innovation within KLM.

Sustainability Through Collective Action

Through the CIC platform, KLM employees have joined forces to tackle sustainability challenges, resulting in tangible environmental benefits. One standout innovation emerged from a collaboration focused on reducing the airline’s carbon footprint by optimizing energy consumption during maintenance operations.

By crowdsourcing ideas and involving external sustainability experts, the team introduced more energy-efficient practices and developed a framework for sustainable maintenance processes. This initiative, driven by collective action, has not only reduced operational costs but also aligned KLM with its long-term sustainability goals, demonstrating the impact of collaborative innovation on the environment.
